UK DECAY Spring 2009 Italian Dates
UK Decay to play Italy

Spring 2009 Italian dates now confirmed....

Milan Musicdrome, 30th April.
Bologna Covo 1st May.
Rome Init on 2nd May.

UK Decay are now in the process of arranging a number of gigs in the UK and overseas.
with further dates in the process of being confirmed. The band will appear in Italy for the first time in
its history, playing Milan Musicdrome on the 30th April 2009, Bologna Covo Club on the 1st May and
at the Rome Init Club on the 2nd May.

‘We’re really looking forward to finally getting to Italy,’ said Spon, ‘we tried to play there first
time around but never managed it for various reasons. We’ve been told that there is still a big
interest in the band and I’m hoping that we get the same positive response as we
received at the Drop Dead Festival. We had a small UK contingent in Portugal, and if anyone
from blighty fancies a few days in the Italian sun it would be great to see you.’

Even though nothing is concrete yet, the band hope to soon be in the position of announcing
a central London date hopefully in the late spring/early summer, plus other UK gigs.

‘Last year’s reunion took so much time to arrange that we’re probably not going to arrange
another one until 2010, so we’re planning to use the UK gigs as a chance of getting everyone
together this year,’ added Spon.

Not only to bring
forth UK Decay back to the light of the world stage with the re-release
of the back catalogue, but also Live to a new generational audience,
as well as to those that were there back in the day.

UK Decay Communities website contains much information about the
band, thousands of pages and pictures not only of UK Decay but of a
whole generation of bands and the scene that existed in Luton and the
surrounding Home Counties during the eighties.

UK Decay were an important band in the developing Post Punk – Goth
movement, don’t just take our word for it, this is what others have to say!

UK Decay are one of the original bands to cross over from punk to what
was then becoming called "gothic", in the early '79 London scene, before
the gothic and even post punk bands like Bauhaus, Theatre of Hate, the
Southern Death Cult, and more. In fact they were already established
when many of those bands were not, and helped get many of them on
their feet with gigs.
(Deathrock.com)

Around the same time as Bauhaus were emerging, UK Decay were
discarding their punk roots and developing their own independent "gothic"
sound. Although never as popular as Bauhaus, Joy Division or the
Banshees, UK Decay were far closer to the second wave of Goth bands
and were an important influence on them.
(History of Gothic Culture and the Goth Scene)

UK Decay came straight outta Luton and began messing about with staid
punk rock traditionalism almost immediately. Serving up brash, trouncing
sides heaped up with helpings of brooding sex and sullen menace,
massive sales in the underground and a seminal legacy should have been
theirs…
(Stylus Magazine)

UK Decay were arguably a major influence on an emerging wave of bands
such as the Sisters of Mercy, Sex Gang Children and Southern Death Cult.
These bands together spawned the emerging postpunk and Goth movements
that still resonate today. UK Decay had a major role in developing these scenes,
but had ceased to exist by the time these other bands started getting serious
press coverage and sales.
(Wikipedia)

In an interview with Steve Keaton from Sounds in February 1981, Abbo
from UK Decay inadvertently named the Goth movement:
"he said 'it's
gonna be a movement' and we're going nah, we'll be gone in six months.
He said you've got to get a name for it, it's not dance or alternative or
New Pop or mod... and I remember saying 'we're into the whole Gothic
thing'... and we sat there laughing about how we should have gargoyle
shaped records and only play churches. Course he put it all in the
interview.. for six months everything went quiet then when the album
came out everyone was asking 'what's this Gothic thing you're into?'
And it's a total joke!"

Two months later, in an interview with the US magazine "Flipside", he
used "gothic" again to describe their style:
Flipside: Is your music political?
Abbo: Uh, well yeah some of it, the early stuff is real political, "For My
Country" was sort of an anti-nationalist thing, pacifist. Rubella Ballet created that rare
bright hue of primary dischord amongst the hordes of combat black.”[/i]

Rubella Ballet began in early1979 after Zillah & Sid recruited ex Fatal
Microbes Pete Fender & Gemma. Hailing from the Crass, Poison Girls,
Flux of Pink Indian’s Anarcho Punk stable, they soon found themselves
playing on the same bill as those bands and then later under their own
right. They toured the UK and parts of Europe over the next couple of
years. In true DIY style, their first recording; Ballet Bag , was a nine track
cassette in a bag with a badge, poster & lyric book. It was released in
1982 reaching number 9 in the UK independent LP charts. Later that year
their first vinyl single, Ballet Dance, went on to reach number 1 in the
independent single charts and led on to a session on the legendary John
Peel show, the first of two sessions by Rubella Ballet.

In 1983/4, they toured with Death Cult and were riding high again in the
independent charts with ‘42f’ a 3 track EP, released on Jungle Records.
Although the bands line up fluctuated from time to time, the core of Zillah
& Sid (vocals and drums) kept the band together. This they did throughout
the mid eighties releasing further singles and 3 studio albums and a
double live album.
In the 90’s Zillah & Sid collaborated with various members of the dance
collective, Spiral Tribe, to create Xenophobia, an act they would showcase
at various illegal raves.
As Xenophobia, they released a techno dance track for the compilation
‘Beyond the Threshold‘ and subsequent singles appeared under that title.

Into the 2000’s, Zillah & Sid’s Rubella Ballet returned to their punk roots
and headlined The Anti Society festival 2000 in the Czech Republic and
Across the Decades 2 day punk festival at The Sanctuary in Milton Keynes
in 2000. This big event featured bands like The Damned, Stiff Little
Fingers, Selector, Steve Ignorant and the Subhumans etc.

October 2007 Zillah released a film about Punk Rock women entitled,
'She’s a Punk Rocker UK'. (see below) An hour long documentary
including interviews with Poly Styrene, Eve Libertine, Julie Burchill, Gay
Advert, Vi-Subversa and many more.
Rubella Ballet are currently riding a wave that will see them headlining
the Gothic Pogo Festival in Leipzig Germany in May and the Drop Dead
Festival, Lisbon Portugal in October. The band are now appealing to a
new, young generation who want some of that
Day-Glo-Anarcho-Psychedelic Punksters, DIY ethos!

The band have become infamous for their different and innovative style
of music and the shock value of wearing ultraviolet day-glo clothes to
brighten up London's east end, dark, violent, poor, ghettoized, drug
dealing, working class shithole that they lived in into a different land as
everywhere they went people smiled and laughed instead of wanting to
kill them.

(Wikipedia)

We are honoured and proud to present to the party….Rubella Ballet!
Rubella Ballet official site…

Rubella Ballet at Myspace…You can hear some of their music there

Milton Keynes very own oldschool, hardcore punx...
Dun 2 Def

Hailing from Milton Keynes in 1996 after being known as "77" they
changed the name to Dun2def in 2001. There has been a few
line up changes and the addition of a second vocalist and some changes in
the sound dun2def is now more rampant than ever before. Folks would dance
away the night to Marc Almond's Tainted Love, Spear of Destiny’s
Liberator, Baby Turns Blue by the Virgin Prunes, the Sisters of Mercy’s
Alice, Dark Entries by Bauhaus and The Cult’s She Sells Sanctuary and
many more classics from the first generation of Gothdom.

The Switch Club, in retrospect played an important early role in
consolidating the entrepreneurial Goth Club with sustainability, post Bat
Cave.
Nick will be making a welcome return to our UK DK COM Reunion event
and spinning some of his classic poppadoms, so get your giro's and
crimpers out!

(tune-list thanks to Neil Orr's fantastic 'History is made at night: The politics of dancing and musicking' weblog)

From The Coven Club and Thursday Fury we proudly present..
Nephilimbabe

Nephilimbabe is a dedicated DJ and promoter for the Luton alternative
scene who has run Luton’s only gothic night The Coven since its opening
in July 2002. Deathrock, Goth, Psychobilly, Gothabilly and Post-Punk – you’ll find it all
in Drop Dead Magazine, which is put out by the same people who bring us
the phenomenal Drop Dead Festival.”

Issue 2 of Polina Y's visually stunning, USA based Drop Dead Magazine
is now available from vendors across North America. This edition contains a 6-page
feature on UK Decay, with Lakina coaxing out of Steve Spon some very
dark and colourful memories from the age of Decay!

Also featured are interviews with Andi Sex Gang (by Greg Fasolino), Lena
Lovich, SIIIII, Black Ice, Vox Ab Nihil, Deadbolt, Psychcharger, and a look at the
Cemeteries of Prague.
The magazine also contains reviews of clubs, festivals, new and old school releases,
DIY, artwork and fashion, Music business help for artists and a lot more goodies!
This really is a ‘hardware’ magazine which reminds very much of the now defunct UK
‘Zig-Zag’ magazine. Full colour and gloss paper it is a lovingly crafted publication for
the ‘now’ generation, it even has a fascinating article about stencilling, dyeing;
customising ones clothes; “For the less you spend on clothes,
the more you’ll have for records and gigs”
Fantastic stuff, but for the UK public, I guess if you are after a copy you will have
to think, mail order or import it from the European distributor in Germany.

More details can be found on the magazine website

Drop Dead Magazine.com

or at their Myspace Site..

Drop Dead Magazine at Myspace

W.W.

Edited Sat Nov 11, 2006
UK Decay Communities

THE PUNK SCENE WAS BETTER THAN BEDFORD,
WAY BETTER, BIGGER, MORE ACTIVE, AND IT WAS CENTERED AROUND UK
DECAY WHO WERE WELL KNOWN.

Marsh Farm festival

Wed May 31, 2006.

I happened to come accross the name Toad the Wet Sprocket the
other day and it reminded me of the Marsh House Music Festival....

The first festival that comes to mind featured the Jets and the
Nervous Surgeons. Both bands evolved into the Teevees and Click
Click, although I can not recall the details of the metamorphis.
Although my memory has faded I recall UK Decay and possibly Pneumania
appearing at later versions and possibly the Acme Attractions
and in true festival style at least one of these occassions was
just an almighty mud bath......

On the subject of the Marsh House Farm festival by coincidence
we have been sent a scan of a Luton news article relating to one
of those memorable events.

The 'Anti-Nirex Tape' ('Dumping it on Parliament')

UPDATED ! June 2nd 2006.

Recently it was brought to our notice that these MP3's were no
longer working. When we looked, they had in fact disapeared! So
we took the oppurtunity to update the compilation. Recently a
further version of the cassette had surfaced so we had a listen
and compiled the best versions for quallity from the original
'Bugsy' version along with the 'new' version.

Gallery News

Thu Jun 29, 2006.

From now on, all Gallery updates will be featured on this post
below. So this is one place you will be able to quickly check
for new images. Previously, depending on what image was updated
a post was made in a corrosponding topic, relevant to the image.
It was logical at first to do it this way, however now there are
now over 600 images in the Galleries and with the passing of time
coupled with the growing complexities of the sub Galleries, for
the aid of easier navigation, we shall now use this post to document
all updates!

That is simply too good
to be true, even if the artist, publisher and record label, were to get the
full 100 f the revenue generated. This is unlikely as there is no
contract, permission granted, or license.

The quality of the download of the UK Decay recordings
will almost certainly be a poorly 'cleaned up' vinyl affair.
It definitely will not touch the 'real thing' when it finally comes out.
At the end of the day.. THESE GUYS ARE DODGY!
Would you trust them with your credit card details?

Furthermore they offer a partnership program whereby they offer
other websites a deal to mirror the content of MP3 sugar sharing
the so called profits. Below are 3 such websites

http://mp3d.kh.ua
http://mp3db.uzhgorod.ua
http://www.themp3direct.com

Many more are set to join this bandwagon, giving not just artists an
even harder time but also the major legal download sites such as
I-Pod and MP3.com cause for concern.

Yes we have had Illegal downloading for years, this however is different,
these guys are pretending they are Legal and making a selfish profit out of their crime.

More

UK Decay Communities

Field trip to the Gothic Nightmares at the Tate!

Gothic Nightmares at the Tate!!

"Gothic Nightmares " explores the work of Henry Fuseli (1741–1825) and
William Blake (1757–1827) in the context of the Gothic – the taste for
fantastic and supernatural themes which dominated British culture from
around 1770 to 1830.

We embarked on a field trip to the ‘Gloomth’ of Tate Britain’s ‘Gothic
Nightmares’ exhibition earlier in the week. A feast for the eyes for those
who are interested in the ‘Gothic and the Sublime’ art culture and history.
The exhibition runs until the 1st May 2006 and it will set you back about
£7.00 to gain entry.

After initial disappointment that the works of Hieronymus Bosch and the
later works of Jan Toorop would not be featured (The emphasis (brief) of
this exhibition is actually from a world perspective about a time in British
Art History covering the years 1770 to 1830. So you wont find these or
the likes of Edgar Allen Poe or H.P.Lovecraft etc).

We were rewarded however on entering the exhibition by the sight of
Henry Fuseli’s famous The Nightmare. The image has been repeatedly
used in such classics as Jame’s Whales Frankenstein, Ken Russell’s
Gothic, Nosferatu and Buffy the Vampire Slayer etc
And there it was, history on the wall in front of us, we stood transfixed
as we pondered Mr. Fusili’s nightmare.

Note the lady lying on the bed on the Franky ad!

The next few hours were spent wondering through multimillions worth
of ‘Gothic and Sublime’ artwork real-estate, absorbing as much detail as
possible. In a trance like state we went from room to room sometimes
almost gasping at the scale and sheer size of some of the exhibits such
as Fusili’s Titania and Bottom

William Blakes Death on a Pale Horse was also in attendance along with
scores of his other works, that guy had one hell of a warped imagination!

The artist James Gillray, whose satirical caricatures lampooned the
politics of the era caught my eye with an aura of unnerving familiarity
as we made our way to the ‘Phantasmagoria’ (a room with 3 walls and
projected images) that reminded me of the old ghost trains at the
fairground.

All through the exhibitions there were references to classical literature
such as ‘The Book of Revelations’, Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Milton’s
Paradise Lost, Greek and Biblical mythology etc, it showed how these
great artist’s drew their warped inspirations for their artwork from
classical texts and myths.

It then goes on to highlight the inspiration that some of these great
artworks and artists had on contemporary to the time and later writers
and artists, such as Mary Shelley, Matthew ‘Monk’ Lewis, Angela Carter,
Patrick McGrath etc

Lacking was any reference to Gothic music (I guess I would say that
wouldn’t I!) not that matters really but if Artist’s can influence writers
and vice versa , what about musicians?
Mind you this was the Tate Gallery! I wondered though if there were
any musical compositions created that were inspired by say Fuseli’s
Nightmare within (or without!) that period.
So on the whole Gothic Nightmares is a very inspiring and thought
provoking event, a must for those into Gothic and Sublime culture
and history.

Photo taking in the exhibition is not allowed so be warned! We took
our camera and got some nice ‘Neo-Gothic’ shots of the MI5 building
though!

Finally after being 'thrown out' (at closing time of course!) we made our
way along Millbank towards Pimlico and the thronging rush hour hourdes!

Pics by Werewolf, Ella Jo
The Gothic Nightmares home page
More from the UK Decay Gothic Forum

This was Ella Jo's treat by the way! Thanks a million!

Another Uk Decay live tape has surfaced

Another Uk Decay live tape has surfaced: Preston warehouse early 1981

Paul B. (from Manchestre, UK) recently kindly sent in a CD of a Preston
Wharehouse UK Decay gig dated early 1981 (Nice one palu B!) a rare
live concert featuring Lol turvey on Bass guitar.
At the current time Frank has the CD repotoire and is reviewing its content
but off the top of my head & a hunch this is another version of the same
tape that 'circulated' earlier and we have got another version of .
This CD rendition although plays a little fast and clips has got a nice 'feel'
about it and presents a rare version of the 'Decay', 'Interim period'
See here for further details

'Lol' Turvey..UK Decay line-up early 1981

Featuring 'Lol Turvey' on Bass this performance is reasonably tight and
crisp...one of the better live performances of the period, taken I think from
the mixing desk.

Paul B. has re-titled 'Portrait' - 'Black out' (an easy mistake if you
remember we named it 'Black art' at one time!)
But for a period this track was 'medleyed' with 'The Black Cat' from the
'Black 45' EP. So this shows that at least this tune transended the demise
of Martin Segovia Smith, although it is doubtfull that it went much further
than that.

Another point to remember is that following 'Lol's' departure, UK DK
left for the US tour and were faced with a gruelling 3 week, 18 date tour
of the west coast with a brand new bassist. Within ten days of
returning to the UK, with Creeton- the US bassist the band embarked on
their first major UK tour. (with Play Dead and The Dark supporting)
This was the tour that included such memorable events as the Bedford
and Middlesboro riot's These events are remembered because thats how
memories work! but this tour actually layed down the foundations for
what was to become.
Eventually Creeton returned to the US (& Social Unrest) and Dk were
again without a bassist for a period before finally, Ed 'Twiggy' Branch
joined the line-up. By then the band were admidst great pressure to
finish the recording of the FMMO album. For some reason I guess at that
time in the pressure's of recording commitments and gigs that these
tunes simply got 'overlooked' (& maybe forgotton!) in the rush to get the
album out.

'The Man with the Glass Hand', is a point in question here, a very rare
track that completely fell by the wayside on the departure of Segovia.

My theory is that these were new songs that were being worked on at
the time leading up to the end of the early 'Classic UK Decay line up'.
Because the pressure's of live gigs & recording the album the band simply
had to prioritise their workload. Spon admitted that he had totally
forgotton about these songs untill he heard them recently!

Death So Fatal is a project concieved to collect up the best possible
recordings of some of these lost and forgotton 'UK/DK' tracks.
This is work in progress and will hopefully see the 'light of day'
later in the year.
 More news to follow

note: There are now aproximately 20 of UK Decay's live shows from
around 25 years ago that are now digitized.
Appeal..to our US friends..
None of the above mentioned UK Decay live shows are from the USA!
the band toured the west coast playing with amongst others, the Dead
Kennedy's, Social Unrest and other 'Surf-Punk' and 'Hardcore' bands
such as maybe The Circle Jerks?? etc etc ..
DOES ANYONE HAVE any Live RECORDINGS of UK DECAY in the USA?? or photo's??
If you can help please email....
werewolf@ukdecay.co.uk

Thank you!
W.
Mick Mercers Review

Copied from Mick Mercer's 'Live Journal' Jan 2nd 2005

UK DECAY
NIGHTS FOR CELEBRATION
UK DK

Pity the poor Goths who never saw UK Decay, or experienced the kind of days which may never come again, where, with a fully functioning music media, Goth started and grew effectively in the UK because small amounts of coverage were enough to get a hard working band sufficient exposure to spread their name throughout the country. If their records were any good they could be playing to thousands within months. Word-of-mouth was like a plague back then. Bands who ventured abroad spread their reputation further, and assumed a larger form onstage, as confidence inflated their imagination. While nobody was bigger than Adam & The Ants in the underground channels, UK Decay were one of the biggest bands behind them. If they had mainly concentrated on the UK they would eventually have got onto a bigger label, as they were quite capable of headlining the largest venues.

That’s the nostalgia over with, as we start a New Year, knowing full well the possibilities/limitations our bands face these days, but I started that way because someone raised an interesting point with me recently, asking who was the most important band – Bauhaus or UK Decay? The answer was the latter, in every way imaginable. Bauhaus were simply an excellent band who had the music but needed to wait to discover an image, then went their own way. UK Decay had the sound, didn’t give a toss about image, and had the Punk ethos, so they helped bands along the way, understanding the communal aspect. (Prime beneficiary of their support, for instance, was Sex Gang Children, but many benefited.) UK decay were cool, as well as responsible.

You know, there never was a more tumultuous band as UK Decay in full flight either. This CD finds them at a time when Eddie Branch’s bass and Steve Harle’s drums together would blow away any Goth band on the planet today, and with Spon’s guitar guile, their style was like an angry fountain. Songs which grew and developed in ugly, violent environments (they hardly ever had time to rehearse!), these are also celebratory items, which the crowd love. ‘Unwind’ twists handily into the exuberantly scummy ‘Werewolf’, and ‘Dresden’ is on fire (oops!), while ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Barbarians’ are dollops of ratty noise, the latter made skittishly acceptable by Harle’s flashing finesse. ‘Sexual’ still shivers in a masterful way, with a grizzly bass/drum rope ladder across which Abbo plunges and bucks, as guitar arrows fly in all directions, and ‘Stagestruck’ is a slinky bass-boosted bastard, with a hearty, howling punch.

‘Rising From The Dread’ is a lolloping spree of rusty sparks, ‘Twist In The Tale’ cavorts with wordy jousting and ‘Unexpected Guest’ has one of the greatest bass openings ever, out of which the rest crawl into a punishing roaring, semi-commercial style, where the macabre intensity festers beautifully. ‘Testament’ is as mesmerising now as it was then, with gaseous guitar drifting over rhythmic barbed wire, on which Abbo is caught, roaring happily. Then they flip backwards and give us the early ‘Black Cat’, charming by comparison, before they pound to a finish in Hammersmith with the brittle ‘UK Decay’, a Pistolian ‘For My Country’ and another ‘Unwind.’ The bonus tracks included then come from St. Albans, four months earlier. These are more faded in quality but include a blunt ‘Duel’, frantic ‘Jerusalem’, jerking ‘Mayday Malady’ and a rumbling ‘Stagestruck.’

UK Decay split up far too soon, when Abbo went off to form the thunderously dull Furyo, and with no CD reissues, due to difficulties between the band and Southern Studios agreeing on what to do, their reputation has dwindled disappointingly. Many people just don’t appreciate the essential part they played in Goth’s birth, or how fantastic they sound. Now Spon has at least got everyone to agree this can come out maybe things will change and their roles as Dark Midwives will be recognised, as well as the quality of their songs. I have no idea as to what difference the re-mastering’ element makes, but the Klub Foot material is superb, while still not as exciting as they could be! Other releases should soon follow, including their sole ‘For Madmen Only’ album.

The single most important band in the initial Goth phase, these are your spiritual forefathers and, for once, respect is due.
Nice clear vocals, deep twangy bass, striking drumming and
flowery, expressive guitar; the Decay hallmarks."
Melody Maker 1983
"

"Once upon a time there was a band called UK Decay, and if it wasn't for them most of you young Gothlings would have nothing to listen to. It really is that simple, because they bridged the Punk to Goth era in a helpful, motivating, inspirational manner. For more than twenty years their records have been collectors items among people of taste, but nothing has been re-released on CD. This changes next year, but for now, for anyone registered on http://www.ukdecay.co.uk there is a chance to get a limited edition re-release of 'Night For Celebration', the recording of their final gig at the Clarendon Ballroom. Just thought you might like to know."

Mick Mercer December 2004

Presented by UK Decay Communities
